The Bernardino Machado Museum, inaugurated in 2001, is housed in the Palacete of Barão da Trovisqueira, built on orders in 1857 by José Francisco da Cruz Trovisqueira, one of the most relevant “Brazilians of return trips” in Famalicense.
In the architecture of the building, the tile covering of the main façade and part of its interior, the wooden staircase and the ceilings in ornamental stucco, stand out, presenting neoclassical decoration with mythological, allegorical symbolism and phytomorphic motifs.
The Museum project was born from the close collaboration between the Municipality of Vila Nova de Famalicão and the descendants of the former President of the Republic Bernardino Machado, who deposited and donated a set of personal, academic and professional objects, in addition to their documentary and bibliographic collection, one of the richest and most significant for the study of the history of the First Republic.
In the permanent exhibition, it is possible to discover the different facets of Bernardino Machado – the Man, the Pedagogue, the Scientist and the Politician -, the refoundation of the municipality of Vila Nova de Famalicão (1835) and his political, economic and social journey until the end of the XIX century.
Since 2002, it has been part of the Portuguese Museums Network.
The temporary exhibition room is a point of interest when visiting the Museum.
