Midões is part of the municipality of Tábua and is a region full of history and antiquity, which has left traces from prehistory to the Roman occupation, as well as more recent periods that accompanied the evolution of the country, such as the pillories and manor houses.
Throughout the journey we have the possibility to observe the magnificent landscapes with the Serra da Estrela in the background, and, as we are on the Beira plateau and in the heart of the borders, the Caramulo and Lousã mountains are also almost always within reach of the eye. .
On the other hand, the small river Cavalos, with its unusual bed, is a huge attraction on the route, in the Sumes area. Here, too, the fauna and flora dot the landscape with majestic colors, where pine trees and cork oaks predominate in the landscape and foxes and wild boars make this place their habitat.
The trail starts at Outeiro de São Miguel, in the village of Coito, where you can visit the Chapel of S. Sebastião and the pillory. Continue towards the village of Midões, visiting the Caricha fountain and another pillory, as well as a remarkable group of manor houses. Go down Rua do Passadiço, going to the Parish Church and the Palace of the First Viscount of Midões. Proceed towards the old primary school, following the narrow path that takes us to Casal da Senhora, making a small detour to visit the anthropomorphic tombs excavated in the granite. In Casal da Senhora, you can see the house where João Brandão was born and lived. Continue towards Rio Cavalos, where you can take a short detour to visit the Roman Bridge of Sumes. Following along the riverbank, you will find the sulphurous water spout. A little further on, leave the banks of the river and go up towards the village of São Geraldo and, continuing along forest paths, you will reach Pedra do Rei, a privileged viewpoint over the valley and other crossing points on the route. The path now continues on the plateau, where it is possible to observe the local flora and find herds grazing. Descending through an area of pine forest, you approach the banks of the river again to reach the village of Ribeira, where you can find Water Mills. Going back up towards Touriz, pass by the old houses and the place of Esporão, where there is an old source of always fresh water. The circle closes again in the village of Coito to end again in Outeiro de São Miguel.
