This is the most emblematic dolmen in the municipality of Sever do Vouga. It is large (mega), and is complete, being the only one that still preserves the chamber’s hat and access corridor. This dolmen is part of a necropolis that currently has 12 more or less visible monuments. The Pedra da Moura 1 Dolmen was built in the Late Neolithic, around 5000 years ago. This dolmen is located in a necropolis with 12 more or less visible tombs.
This dolmen, around 5,000 years old, is the megalithic monument (mega=big; litos=stone) that has the best state of conservation in Sever do Vouga. It has a sepulchral chamber where people were buried with their everyday objects, consisting of nine pillars topped by a large “hat”, weighing 14.5 tons.
Access would be via a corridor of about four and a half meters, also covered by slabs. It still preserves the mound, made up of earth and rocks and is delimited by a ring of stones.
Of the materials collected, which can be seen at the Municipal Museum, arrowheads, blades and lamellas made of flint and quartz stand out. Another interesting aspect are the traces of engraved motifs found on the left side of the headboard: two engraved circles between which a serpentine horizontal line appears. (monument classified by IPPAR. Decree No. 29/90 of 07/17, 1990 as IIP – Property of Public Interest)
A revealing curiosity of the astronomical knowledge of men from 4/5 thousand years ago is the fact that the central pillar is strictly facing east, towards the point where the sun rises on the summer solstice, on the biggest day of the year (day June 21th).”
A visit to the Municipal Museum is recommended, which dedicates a good part to archeology and this period.
