This temple was built shortly after the creation of the parish of S. Simão do Nesperal (16th century) by its residents

The Church had four altars, where the images of S. Simão, Nossa Sr.ª. da Soledade, S. Brás, Santo António, Espírito Santo, Nª Sr. ª da Piedade, Nª Sr. ª do Rosário and S. Miguel.

In 1787 there was work on the roof and clock tower. However, in 1824, the population of Nesperal asked the Grand Priory of Crato to «repair and rebuild» their mother church, «which is in the most deplorable state of ruin, and the next one to be demolished completely. , due to the lack of woodwork and repairs, which is in great need». The intervention advanced the following year.

The church has an admirable estate where three boards by the painter Gonçalo Prego stand out, with epi maneirista carved and gilded carving frames, representing, respectively, S. João Batista, the Agnus Dei and D. Nuno Álvares Pereira, dating from the 17th century. The image of D. Nuno Álvares Pereira follows, according to the authors Vítor Serrão and Ana Maria Farinha, the aristocratic portrait style. The Baroque altarpieces in the National Style punctuate the high altar, where there is also an image of Christ on the Cross and sculptures of S. Miguel, the Holy Trinity (in limestone and originating from the 15th century), Nossa Senhora da Piedade and São Brás ( late Gothic piece). Reference is also made to the existence of a baptismal font in granite stone with the cross of the Order of Christ engraved on the face (possibly from the 14th century, as well as different objects of jewelry and ivory.

It has undergone work in recent years.

In 1700, the Grand Prior of Crato financed the reconstruction of the chancel (it had already been intervened in 1630) and of the sacristy. Also in that year, the brotherhoods «had the moldings and panels made for the ceiling of the chancel and the two side altars, for which they spent 110,000 réis».
