Monument to the Justice of Fafe
By Eduardo Tavares

The Monument to the Justice of Fafe, by Eduardo Tavares, was inaugurated at 11:00 am on the 23rd of August 1981, in the rear space of the Palace of Justice. It consists of a statue with the peculiarity of representing a man hitting another with a stick and was placed at the back of the Fafe court, implying that when official justice does not work, the popular hand presents itself. The Justice of Fafe “is the symbol that most characterizes the city. To speak of Fafe, for many, is to speak of the Land of Justice and consequently of the legend “Com Fafe, Ninguém Fanfe“.

The “Justice of Fafe” is one of the biggest, albeit controversial, referential symbols of this city. It is for many the true “ex-libris” of Fafe. As such, there could not be a monument evocative of this tradition, which travels from one end of the country to the other, associated with the name of Fafe and with what is happening here, not always for the best reasons, which displeases many natives. The symbol of “Justice” is based on a famous legend, with several versions, which one is closest to the “truth”, if the legends testify to any approximation to the truth, which one is the most outlandish and fruit of popular imagination.
