Medieval Bridge of Alvalade
Bridge over Ribeira de Campilhas

The Medieval Bridge of Alvalade was built over the old bed of the Ribeira de Campilhas, 500 m from the village and appears at the continuation of Rua Padre Jorge de Oliveira on a dirt path.

It has been classified as a Property of Municipal Interest since 2004.

The Medieval Bridge, arched, has a simple rectangular plan, in stone masonry and plastered lime, with the deck in three planes, the central one being horizontal and longer than the extreme ones, with traces of an irregular sidewalk and side walls. fillets.

The façade is made of a single plastered panel, torn by five basket-wing arches separated by semi-cylindrical buttresses with a conical finish, which may have originally functioned as carvings and an identical elevation, but without buttresses next to the arches.

Originally, the bridge was part of the road system that, since the Roman period, allowed the connection between the city of Miróbriga and Vipasta, the current Aljustrel, and joined the banks of the Ribeira de Campilhas, whose course was diverted a few meters to the west, in the middle of the century, due to agricultural irrigation works.

Additional notes

Currently, it is in a good state of conservation and is surrounded by vast agricultural fields, significantly marking the landscape, both for its size, uncommon in this region of the Alentejo Coast, and also for the white light of its whitewash.
