In the early 15th century, D. Afonso, 8th Count of Barcelos, later 1st Duke of Bragança, committed himself to building a sophisticated urban fence around Barcelos. The Torre da Porta Nova is the only one of the three main gates of the wall that has survived to this day. In 1926, it was classified as a National Monument.
With the recent renovation (2010-2013) it gained new features as a space of cultural, pedagogical and touristic dimension, presenting itself as one of the most visited heritage spaces in the region. This property was, in 2014, distinguished with the first prize “Most Accessible Municipality”, in the Leisure/ Heritage/ Tourism category, by the National Institute for Rehabilitation (INR). No visit to this space is complete without a visit to its magnificent viewpoint. There you can be dazzled by the panoramic view over the entire historic center, the river Cávado and Monte da Franqueira.
Scheduled visits to this monument by organized tourism and similar groups must be booked at least 72 hours in advance. Telephone: 253 824 261. Email: [email protected].
The Barcelos Handicraft Center is also located in this space.
