When it was founded is not known for sure. Already in sec. In the 14th century, there was a Jewish quarter in Castelo de Vide, which consisted of a group of houses, next to the main door of the Castle.
The building considered to be a synagogue is located at Rua da Judiaria / Rua da Fonte and faces East / West. The whole set consists of a single volume, with two floors. It is commonly called “Synagogue”, but with the appropriate name of “BEIT-HA-MIDRASCH-SEFARDIN”. It is understood as the building where the Jewish community that lived in Castelo de Vide until the 16th century met. XV.
It features three ogival doors, which start from imposts with sharp edges, logs and grooves. In the access door to the room where “Aron Há Kodesh or Ehal” is located, there is a groove in the upper right corner, called “mesusah” – a Hebrew word that means “door jamb”, where a small scroll with the prayer “ Shema Israel”, considered a prayer of reference for the Jews. The “Aron Há Kodesh”, facing east, consists of a structure with two levels: in the upper part the Holy Books would be kept, in the lower level, the respective cavities destined to the three elements of great significance for the Jews: “Water, Oil and Wine”. On the left side of the structure, there is a corbel, where the sacred scriptures would be supported, and at whose base are implanted the seven balls that represent the days of the week: “Six days in which God created the world and on the seventh, the rest of the constructions”.
