Aboim is a parish in the municipality of Fafe with about 400 inhabitants, the most settled parish in the north of the municipality. This belonged to the municipality of Cabeceiras de Basto until 1853, when it was incorporated into the municipality of Fafense. Aboim is today a tourist route in the municipality, and along its pedestrian routes of Small Route (PR) and one of Grande Route (GR), observe the rural heritage of the villages of the highlands and the five surrounding mountains: Marão, Gerês, Cabreira, Serra de Agra and Maroiço.
The village of Aboim has a windmill with unique characteristics, built at the beginning of the 20th century, more specifically between the years 1923/1926. The Parish Council, with the support of Fafe City Council and the Leader project, decided to recover it with traditional materials and techniques. After a year of work by the company Etnoideia (Research, projection and reconstruction) and thanks to community involvement, it was possible to collect all their memories.
In 2007 the mill became part of the Portuguese Mills Network and the International Society of Molinology.
The parish, in order to complement the theme of uses and customs of the village, decided to create the Interpretive Center – Pedagogical Village of Montanha e do Centeio, installed in the old primary school of Aboim. The multipurpose interactive space brings together ‘mini-explorators and workshops’ where it is possible to learn, relive and remember.
