Every year, on Saint John’s Day, the 24th of June, the population of Vildemoinhos heads towards the city, in a parade of animation and floats that attracts thousands of locals and visitors.
From the most traditional, to the most artistic or satirical, the colour, the traditions, the quatrains, the manjericos and the famous bread are ingredients that accompany this centenary parade, whose origin dates back to the year 1652. Above all, more than festivity of the city, the Cavalhadas de Vildemoinhos are part of the history of this village, of mills and millers, and of its triumph in the face of adversity and the bitter times of labor. The tradition is therefore a symbolic festivity, an annual ritual of thanksgiving to Saint John, the miraculous saint who answered the prayers of millers and villagers in times of despair.
