The Festa das Cruzes is considered the first great pilgrimage of Minho, in a mix of color, tradition and popular animation, this is one of the most important events in Barcelos.
Its origin dates back to the 16th century and is associated with a legend (link). In the year 1504, the shoemaker João Pires was returning from the mass and saw, in the middle of Campo da Feira, a black cross. What he considered to be “a sacred sign” quickly became a popular event, which led to devotion to the “Senhor da Cruz (Lord of the Cross)”, materialized in the Temple of Bom Jesus da Cruz, is today the epicenter of the Feast of the Crosses. It takes place between April 25th and May 3rd, the latter day being dedicated to Senhor Bom Jesus da Cruz and the traditional procession of the invention of the Holy Cross. May 1st is the day of the traditional battle of flowers.
Date: May 3, municipal holiday, (lasts approximately 10 days, in the period between the indicated date).
