The Museum’s assets have an important collection of more than 10,000 movable pieces, of such diverse types as: oenology; ethnology; traditional technology; industrial archaeology; graphic, plastic and decorative arts.
By the hands of the great wine maker, José Eduardo Raposo de Magalhães, the Adega do Olival Fechado was created at the end of the 19th century. XIX, in Alcobaça.
From a modern cellar for its time, equipped with the latest technology of the time, a National Museum was born in the 19th century. XX, by Eng. Manuel Augusto Paixão Marques, its founder, delegate of the then National Wine Board (J.N.V.).
The production of JEM brand wines (José Eduardo Magalhães) gave way in the middle of the 20th century. XX, to a large-scale industry, implemented by the newly created J.N.V.
Today, the museum’s legacy shows a well-preserved memory of the modernization carried out in the 1940s, when the Quinta do Olival Fechado complex was acquired by J.N.V. to the heirs of José Eduardo Raposo de Magalhães, during this period the transformation of the cellar space into industrial, vertical deposits of white and red wines, following the model of Abel Pereira da Fonseca.
From the 1960s onwards, a set of collections of great historical and heritage value was formed, due to the closure of some of the J.N.V.’s warehouses, resulting in the largest and most complete national wine museum.
The memories of the J.N.V. and the current Institute of Wine and Vine are present here, contributing to the indisputable national dimension of this impressive Museum.
The museological collection is the most complete in the country in terms of winemaking, covering aspects of the material culture of wine of unquestionable historical, scientific, industrial and ethnographic value, ranging from the 17th century to the advent of the 21st century. A true Museum of Wine Culture.
