Church classified as a national monument in 1927. It is a temple from the 17th century, whose construction is associated with the need to assert the country as an independent nation from Spain
Its origin was a small temple, voted to be abandoned, until April 26, 1698, a miracle occurred: Santo Cristo then sweated blood, according to the existing inscription in the church. The news quickly spread and the first stone for a sanctuary was laid between 1725 and 1739. Throughout the 18th century it assumed importance as a place of pilgrimage.
The building comprises a temple with a Latin cross layout, a sacristy and a storage room. Noteworthy is the sacristy with a paneled ceiling with three dozen coffers painted with scenes from the life of Christ, executed in 1768 by Damião Bustamante from Valladolid, and walls also covered with painting on canvas.
On November 8, 2014, the title of Basilica of S. Cristo de Outeiro was granted to the church – Sanctuary of Santo Cristo de Outeiro, making it the only Basilica in the country that is located in a village.
