Bragança Castle was built in 1409 by order of D. João I, on the foundations of the time of the first king of Portugal, D. Afonso Henriques.
Comprising an imposing Torre de Menagem and a double wall, the set is very well preserved and the main square, known as the citadel or village, where the Church of Santa Maria and the Domus Municipalis are located, maintains the old medieval houses of streets narrow and small whitewashed houses.
The walls are made up of 15 towers and 3 gates, including the Torre da Princesa, former dependence of the Casa dos Alcaides which holds the legend of a princess taken prisoner, and the Porta da Vila which welcomes visitors to the castle.
In the Torre de Menagem, measuring 17 meters on a side and 33 meters high, some Gothic artistic elements are worth mentioning, namely the battlements, windows and coat of arms of the Royal House of Avis, founded by D. João I. go up to the top floor, for the view over the city and the surrounding landscape.
Inside the Tower, with five floors, is installed the Military Museum.´
