Considered the greatest living memory of Camilo, Casa de Seide gained a historical significance of fundamental importance for a profound knowledge of the life and work of the writer, each visit constituting a renewed invitation to read Camilo and a commitment to the perpetuity of culture and culture. Portuguese language of which his work constitutes such a unique statement.

The house, designated by Camilo because the writer lived there, was built by Manuel Pinheiro Alves, Ana Plácido’s first husband, in the first half of the 19th century, when he returned from Brazil in possession of a large fortune. Camilo Castelo Branco lived with Ana Plácido in this house for about 26 years, from the winter of 1863 until his suicide in 1890.
The Centro de Estudos Camilianos, created in 1985, was endowed with its own space in 2005, a building designed by the architect Álvaro Siza Vieira, with the aim of boosting the didactic and pedagogical action of the Casa de Camilo and making the vast institution’s heritage, in the fields of bibliography, handwritten documentation, iconography and visual arts.

Classified as a Property of Public Interest since 1978.
Casa de Camilo is the oldest House-Museum in Portugal.
It is considered Camilo’s greatest living memory.
It has been part of the Portuguese Museums Network since 2001.
It was distinguished by the Portuguese Association of Museology with the “Best Portuguese Museum Award – 2006”.
