Castelo de Castelo de Vide
Initiative of D. Dinis, concluding it in the reign of Afonso IV

Medieval fortifications built and undone throughout the 19th century. In the 13th century, at the whim of manorial interests that, almost always, fought with the interests of the crown and also with those of the population, who preferred to have the distant king as lord, the castle was definitely raised, on the initiative of D. Dinis, concluding it if already in the reign of his son, Afonso IV, in 1327. That’s how Vide came to Castelo de Vide.
The Casa da Cidadania Salgueiro Maia is located in the hall of the Torre de Menagem

The castle is located in the S corner of the medieval fortifications, which make up the original village, its walls constituting the extension of those of the urban fence.
With the old wall on the NE section of the courtyard gone, the one that now forms it on that side corresponds to the old barbican in that sector, with the well shown on Duarte D’Armas’ plan. Between this well and the turret adjacent to it, the old door opens, with a broken arch, leading to the old barbican on that side, now gone.
Entrance to the castle is on the SE section, with a barbican, through a door with a broken arch that gives access to a tunnel that leads to the patio.
The Torre de Menagem, massive up to the level of the battlement, features an octagonal room with an off-center cylindrical aljube, large rectangular windows and eight pillars, with a base and capital, from which the ribs are extracted, with a chamfered rectangular section, which close the roof. in round arches.
After several interventions, the reconstruction works on the tower were concluded in 1978.
