Dominating the city, little remains of the primitive castle built by the Templars, probably between 1214 and 1230, in a strategic position from which, on clear days, you can see the entire upper course of the Tagus up to the border area.
Due to the fact that the enclosure of walls and towers had become insufficient, it was later extended by orders of D. Dinis.
Important parts of the wall are still visible today, allowing the differentiation between the medieval city and the modern city.
The medieval city is perfectly framed in its narrow streets that denounce an era, with genuine doorways and toponymy appropriate to the creation of artisan communities (Rua dos Ferreiros, Rua dos Proleteiros…).
