Located in the historic center of the village of Sobral de Monte Agraço, the Interpretation Center of the Lines of Torres includes an exhibition alluding to the French invasions. This museum space intends to make known the period of history that marked the town of Sobral in the troubled period of the third French invasion.
As a museum space, the Interpretation Center of the Lines of Torres aims to promote, safeguard and study the heritage of the Lines of Torres as a military defense system. Here, stories from 1810 are told, a troubled time in the history of Portugal, where characters, events and places that marked the time stand out.
Throughout the exhibition, the military defense system that dictated the withdrawal of the Napoleonic army from Portugal, in what became known as the 3rd French invasion – one of the most important episodes of the Peninsular War, is made known.
Built in the greatest possible secrecy, the Linhas de Torres were built between 1809 and 1810 as a defensive military system, north of the capital. As part of an unparalleled defense strategy, the Lines of Torres were spread over three lines of defense that stretched for about 85 km, from the Tagus River to the Atlantic Ocean. These had 152 military works, armed with 600 pieces of artillery and defended by about 140,000 men. Come and see where we changed Napoleon’s destiny.
