It was built, or at least completed in 1559, being the work of João Lopes “o Velho”, the same man who a few years earlier built the fountain in Caminha and, most likely, some of the similar fountains that we can find in Galician cities such as the case of Pontevedra. It was for several centuries the point of supply of drinking water for the population of Viana and, due to its monumentality and location, one of the urban references of the village.
The Praça da República Fountain is located in the eastern part of Praça da República (formerly Praça da Rainha), in front of the old Town Hall, in the parish of Santa Maria Maior, in the city of Viana do Castelo.
This is a Renaissance fountain, the last of a set of three monumental projects carried out by the Porto-based construction site João Lopes, the Elder in Minho and Galicia. It will have replaced an older fountain on which the stonemasons Fernão Anes (1512) and João Gonçalves (1523) would have worked.
Built in granite, the Praça da República Fountain features a double basin and a tank.
