Castelo de Vide headquarters. Its construction began in 1789, in the place where there would be a small chapel with the same name, founded in 1311 by Lourenço Pires and his wife. It was completed around 1873. It is a large temple, perhaps the largest in Alto Alentejo.
The invocation to Santa Maria da Devesa is unique in our country and it is possible that it is related, not only to the place where it is located, which was called “as terras reguengueiras da coroa pertencentes à devesa do prado”, but also to the need for defense and divine protection on the part of the inhabitants of Castelo de Vide.
This church consists of a set of seven volumes: nave, chancel, transept, two bell towers and two sacristies.
The main façade is flanked by two bell towers, square in plan, each containing four windows of round towers, with bells, separated by pilasters formed by rectangular granite blocks.
The main door opens in the center, the lintel is made of granite decorated in the Baroque style, in a depressed arch, crowned with the head of an angel with open wings, on a small cornice. Flanking the door, there are two granite columns, with a fluted shaft, which rise to the height of the lintel, where it ends with Corinthian capitals. Immediately above the cornice there is a door with an iron balustrade. This entire set is crowned by a kind of coat of arms with baroque decoration.
The main altar was designed by Camilo Korrodi (son of the famous Swiss architect Ernesto Korrodi). Executed in marble of different shades according to the decoration of the church and where we can also see the liturgical symbols, the bread and the fish and in the center the monogram of Christ – XP.
The choir of the Church of Santa Maria da Devesa houses the Museum of Sacred Art Cónego Albano Vaz Pinto.
