The origins of the founding of the Church of Abade de Neiva seem to date back to the 12th century and to the initiative of Queen D.Mafalda.
The current monument, consisting of a church and a tower, dates from the 16th century and is an important landmark of the Romanesque/Gothic style in the Cávado basin, not because of its size but because it is contemporary with the founding of the nation, associated with the reconquest process. It is a National Monument since 1927.
