Already in 1213 its existence is referenced and its property attributed to the Templars. The central nave features several inscriptions alluding to the reuse of structures from before the 17th century. In its construction that reaches the present day, the Baroque style prevails. The elements in gilded carving deserve attention, with emphasis on the Main Chapel, the Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament and the Sacristy.
Raised to the rank of Cathedral in 1956, it was rebuilt in the 17th century in Renaissance style. Elements from the different stages of construction are visible: the 16th-century transept, altarpieces and panels from the 17th century and the chancel and sacristy from the 18th-19th centuries. Due to the scarcity of means to carry out monumental work, it was D. Martim Afonso de Melo, Bishop of Guarda, who rebuilt it in the last quarter of the 17th century.
It has only one nave which is separated from the chancel by a beautiful Renaissance arch, at the end of which is the coat of arms of Bishop D. Martim Afonso de Melo.
The second bishop of the diocese of Castelo Branco, Friar Vicente Ferrer da Rocha (1782-1814), is responsible for the construction (in Baroque style) of the two lateral bodies, with which the temple was enlarged: the Great Sacristy and the Chapel. of the Blessed Sacrament.
