The citânia de Longa, or Castelo de Longa or Castelo dos Mouros, is located on the wall mount, and is classified by IPPAR (Portuguese Archaeological Heritage Institute) as a Property of Public Interest.
Built during the Iron Age, at an altitude of 919 metres, the village was primarily endowed with a complex defensive system, in this case consisting of two lines of wall associated with the existing outcrops, as well as the natural defense conditions conferred by the accentuated cliffs, in a good demonstration of the way in which protohistoric communities (or those of “Recent Prehistory”) were able to adapt to their daily needs and what Nature offered them, wisely harmonizing the telluric force and the molding power of Man.
In fact, the view from the entrance area of the town will impress you due to the excellent state of conservation in which its components reached us, offering us the possibility of catching a glimpse, for even a moment, of the magnificence that archeological similar sites imposed on all of them. , so they approached, especially when they could see the turrets, still visible today.
Exceeding two meters in height and with a width of more than one meter, the granite material used in its construction was placed in a wedge, in horizontal overlap, essential to its robustness and consequent perpetuity. It is possible to identify some structures of a domestic character in the area delimited by the inner wall.
