Soza is a village a few kilometers from Vagos and the second most important in the municipality. With a charter as old as that of Vagos, the first written document mentioning it dates back to 1088. It is here, next to the churchyard, that you will find an impressive cross covered by a hemispherical dome, which dates from 1659 and is located in an excellent state of preservation.
This dome is called “Charola” and is actually an open temple in a circular shape, built in the mannerist style in limestone, with cherubs in high relief. The polychrome image of Christ represented here seems to be from the 16th century. XVII.
There are two legends relating to this cross: one of them says that it was built by Maria Tomé as a thank you for the miracle of the Restoration of Independence in Portugal. Another mentions that Maria Tomé got up from the coffin when it was in front of the old chapel of Nossa Senhora dos Anjos, before being buried. Victim of an epidemic, Maria Tomé’s family’s prayers to Our Lady of Angels produced miracles. As a thank you, she ordered the cruise with the charola. The dedication, on the pedestal of the cruise, says: “Maria Thome ordered this charola to be flown by sva dvasam 1659”.
