The rock art station of Fechadura, located in Serra do Figueiredo, consists of three slabs, on which a set of engravings can be recognized with a chronology pointing to the period between the Chalcolithic and the Roman period, with occasional additions from the Middle Ages to the present day, thus bearing witness to the symbolic and cultural importance of the site for successive human communities.
We are facing an archaeocyte chronologically marked out between the Chalcolithic and the Iron Age, in proof of the symbolic value of the place, at the same time as its cultural relevance to the successive human communities based in the vicinity over such an extended time span, certainly in because of the hunting potential that the territory would bring to its survival.
Consisting of a schist rock, whose vertical panel was used to engrave some motifs using the perforation and incision methods, which, along with abrasion and scraping, are also two of the engraving techniques identified throughout the reference valley. do Côa (COIXÃO, A. do N. S. C., 2000, pp. 31-34), the site becomes particularly interesting due to the eclecticism of the representations. Obtained on the surface of one of the few stone materials that support this type of engraving – shale -, through direct (or indirect) percussion.
Thus, in addition to geometric motifs (quadrangular and rectangular), there are arrows and arrowheads; vulvas and Solomon’s signs, together with shield-like elements, a pentagram and pre-alphabetic and Latin characters, not forgetting the characteristic dots, distributed over an area of approximately six square meters
In the town of Figueiredo there is the CIAR (Rock Art Interpretation Center) a valence that consists of interpreting, valuing and publicizing the Archaeological Stations of Lajeira and Fechadura. In addition, CIAR also includes a space dedicated to the local accommodation unit. There, visitors can stay overnight and enjoy everything that nature tourism can offer.
