The Francisco Tavares Proença Júnior Museum was created in 1910 by the archaeologist after whom it was named and assumes the mission of “the study and investigation, collection, documentation, conservation, interpretation, exhibition and dissemination of the cultural heritage that integrates its collection, with special emphasis on the Archeology and Textiles collections, understood as identity references, sources of scientific research and aesthetic fruition”.
Integrated in the Network of Museums and Cultural Facilities of the Municipality of Castelo Branco, since September 1, 2015, under the Interadministrative Contract for the Delegation of Government Competences, the Francisco Tavares Proença Júnior Museum also has an area for temporary exhibitions, expanded and located in a privileged area, next to the Salão Nobre.
Currently, the museum proposes, in its permanent circuit, three main nuclei: memories of the bishopric, where paintings and tapestries from the 16th century stand out; traditional textile technologies, which records the process of production and artisanal transformation of flax, and another part dedicated to archeology.
