Between Cava de Viriato and the banks of the river Paiva stands the chapel of Nossa Senhora da Conceição. The original invocation of the chapel dates back to the 16th century, in honor of St. Louis, King of France.
The accession to the throne of D. João IV, in 1640, and the inauguration of a new dynasty made Nossa Senhora da Conceição the patron saint of Portugal and the old chapel of S. Luís would thus receive a new invocation. In the second half of the 18th century, António Mendes Coutinho, a disciple of Nasoni, was in charge of giving body to the new chapel with a rococo style, evident in the oculus, in the temple’s portal and in the interior decoration.
