Its construction began in the second half of the 14th century, it was ordered by D. Pedro, the 3rd Count of Barcelos, whose arms are engraved on the archivolts of the main portal. It is a building with a transitional feature from Romanesque to Gothic.
It is one of the greatest exponents of Romanesque architecture in the north of the country, subject to major transformations throughout the 15th to 18th centuries. In the 20th century, the rose window was restored. On the south side of its façade it has a bell tower dating from the 18th century. It has been classified as a National Monument since 1927.
