The old Episcopal Palace was built at the end of the 16th century, as a winter residence, by D. Nuno de Noronha, Bishop of Guarda.
D. João de Mendonça, first bishop of Castelo Branco, founded, in the first quarter of the 18th century, the gardens annexed to the palace, in evocation of S. João Baptista. It was, however, the second bishop of Castelo Branco, D. Vicente Ferrer Rocha, who was responsible for its embellishment translated into the design that it still maintains today.

In formal terms, the garden is divided into four different sites, but linked by different points of articulation: the entrance, the boxwood landing, the flooded garden and the upper level.
The current entrance to the garden has been on Rua Bartolomeu da Costa since 1936, the year it was designed by engineer Manuel Tavares dos Santos. The design obeyed the spirit of the place, both in terms of the flowerbeds and the monumental staircase that leads to the main skid. The tile-covered wall panels served as a repository of memories, but were never fully filled in: old views of the city and portraits of the two bishops who promoted the construction of the garden were the chosen motifs. The portal is from the 17th century. XVIII and came from the garden gardens.
The Jardim do Buxo has a rectangular plan and constitutes the main landing.
Jardim Alagado, adjacent to the previous one, is located on the south side. It is a set of flower beds in a trapezoidal shape that, illusory, seems to emerge from the middle of the lake, causing a surprising visual effect.
