Following the requalification of the place where Fort S. João de Deus would have been installed, in 2013, in the building where the Military Administration operated, the Memory Center of Fort S. João de Deus was inaugurated, an exhibition space with interactive modules that highlight the importance of the military presence in Bragança.
Benefiting from a unique geostrategic position, the city of Bragança made an indelible contribution to the defense of the country’s borders.
The construction of Fort S. João de Deus arose from the need to reinforce the city’s defensive system, after the Restoration of Independence in 1640, with the acclamation of D. João IV as King of Portugal, making the military question pressing with regard to the defense of borders.

This Center intends to recognize the “place” – the site of Sardoal – and the transformation of the hermitage into the Fort which, in honor of its patron saint, was designated as Fort S. João de Deus
