The Museu do Imaginário Duriense (MIDU), inaugurated in January 2009, represents the first of the 48 museum centers of the Douro Museum Network – MuD.

In essence, MIDU intends to be a space for the dissemination and preservation of all manifestations of the traditional imagination of the Douro, both in terms of inherited intangible heritage (legends, traditions, songbooks, novels, etc.), as well as in terms of utopia and of the imagination of the new generations. Its connection to reference spaces of legends and traditions intends to extend the museum’s action to the Douro region, through visiting and evocation itineraries.

Purpose of the Museum
I) Develop and support research on the intangible heritage related to the Douro region, creating a specialized information centre, gathering bibliography and audio-visual recordings, promoting the holding of meetings, colloquia, seminars on the intangible heritage of the region;
II) Contribute to the dissemination of intangible heritage, through exhibitions, dramatizations and other forms, as well as an educational service geared towards this objective;
III) Contribute to the dissemination of other expressions of the imaginary, through exhibitions of painting, sculpture, photography and other arts, as well as the organization of music and theater shows, etc.;
IV) Play an active role in the socio-cultural development of the Douro Region, both as a place of construction and representation of intangible heritage, and as a place of revaluation and dissemination of that heritage, transforming it into an active factor of self-esteem and cultural resource of populations;
V) Contribute to the reinforcement of cultural action structures in the Douro Region.
