Monumentos Megalíticos de Chão Redondo (1 e 2)
Here, the funeral ceremonies took place

Two dolmens (Chão Redondo 1 and 2) located about 35m from each other, built around 6 thousand years ago. Dolmen 2, despite some degree of destruction, is one of the most profusely decorated dolmens in the Iberian Peninsula, with engraved motifs, which makes it a constant reference when studying megalithic art. The atrium, the Intra tomb corridor, the sepulcher and the pillars with the engravings are perfectly visible.

Those who visit this dolmen can notice that, before entering the interior of the monument through the corridor, they pass through a space delimited by a small stone wall: the atrium. It was here that the funeral ceremonies took place, with the whole community. It was the only public space in the dolmen. Only the elect could access the interior. The engraved motifs are distributed throughout the burial chamber and the corridor. The headboard has a series of Vs that can represent a tutelary entity. The pillar on the right registers zigzags and circles and the one on the corridor a meander. In the Municipal Museum you will be able to see some pieces of this monument, such as polished stone axes, geometric microliths, blades and moving parts of manual mills… It was built and used in an ancient phase of megalithism, around the end of the last quarter of the 5th millennium, beginning of the 4th millennium BC, that is to say around 6,000 years ago.

(Monument classified by IPPAR – in 2002 as IIP – Property of Public Interest)

Additional notes

Nearby is the Via Romana that you can take the opportunity to visit.

A visit to the Municipal Museum of Sever do Vouga is recommended, which dedicates a good part to archeology and this period.
