Walls carry the heavy responsibility of protecting cities. Since the fall of the Roman Empire in the century. V, until the Low Middle Ages, in the century. In the 15th century, Viseu was unprotected, with the fortification of the Sé hill as its only refuge.

Throughout history, the city has been plagued by several invasions. The Castilians, resulting from the conflict of the dynastic crisis of 1383-1385, sowed panic and destruction in the city. The loyalty of Viseu to the master of Avis, the future D. João I, then began, in 1418, the construction of the city fence, a work that dragged on for 70 years, only being finished in the reign of Afonso V. From the original section and Of its seven original gates, only the Cavaleiros gate, to the south, and the Soar gate, to the north, are preserved.
