In 2005, from an old hat factory, the Hat Museum was born. Unique in the Iberian Peninsula, the museum is a tribute to the men and women who made the millinery industry one of the most important activities in the county’s history. Find in the museum space the images and pieces that illustrate the way hats are produced, but also the human, social and cultural dimension of a community for which this activity has always assumed an important role.
Conceptually oriented towards the Headgear Industry theme in its production, commercialization, social uses and economic impact, the Hatchery Museum assumes itself as a space for reflection, study and investigation of a reality that shaped the history of the Municipality but also the history of Portuguese industrialization.
It is a socially active, culturally and pedagogically useful space, which evokes multiple stories and memories, contributing to deepen and disseminate knowledge of Sanjoanense identity and culture.
In this context, the Museu da Hataria is the starting point for cultural itineraries that touch other points of interest in the history of the industry in the municipality and the region, and that expand the scope of the visit to other themes, offering its visitors a more accurate view and interesting of the regional reality.
