The Colonial War Museum was born in 1999, through a partnership between the Municipality of Vila Nova de Famalicão, the ADFA (Association of the Armed Forces Disabled) and ALFACOOP (Externato Infante D. Henrique de Ruilhe).
Based on a pedagogical project entitled “Colonial War, a story to tell”.
More than a museum space, it is a place that intends to transmit to the visitor a real knowledge about this period of the History of Portugal, told by those who lived and felt it in the first person. The permanent exhibition portrays the itinerary of the Portuguese combatant in the Colonial War (1961-1974), addressing the themes of O Embarque; The day by day; Military Operations; The Natives; Social and Psychological Action; Religiosity; The Horrors of War; The death; Correspondence and War Godmothers.
The entire museum collection was ceded or donated by former combatants or their families, Delegations of the Armed Forces Disabled Association and by the various branches of the Portuguese Armed Forces.
The visitor will also be able to see the objects used by our Military, such as War Chests (personal objects, food, clothing), Military Uniforms and Equipment (transmission towers, parachutes, helmets, weapons), and War Vehicles.
