The Castro Alves Foundation, established by Commander Manuel Castro Alves, has its genesis in the former Center for Popular Art and Culture in São Pedro do Bairro.
More than just a museum, this is a place where popular culture is present in all the exhibits.
Its activities are centered on three areas: School of Music (1971), School/Workshop of Artistic Ceramics (1979) and Museum of Artistic Ceramics, which opened in 1987.
The Museum building and its museological project were designed by the architect Fernando Lanhas. An innovative project for the time, but still considered a reference museological space for its strong pedagogical nature.
The Museum is closely linked to the functioning of the School/Workshop of Artistic Ceramics, and its collection consists of thousands of copies of pieces executed by young people who had as great drivers and teachers the painters Júlio Resende and Francisco Laranjo, the potter Fernando Sousa and the architect Fernando Lanhas.
Free entry.
The pieces produced by the School/Workshop of Artistic Ceramics of the Castro Alves Foundation are known for the tonality of the clay and for the meticulous expressions and paintings, which distinguishes them from other pieces and clay. The color of the clay is achieved by mixing two different clays, carried out in the School/Workshop facilities.
