Monte de Santa Luzia was, for 25 years (1961 to 1986) the scene of quartz extraction by the “Companhia Portuguesa de Fornos Elétricos” from Canas de Senhorim. As a result, a large crater remains, an authentic “window to the interior of the earth”, which was recently used for the construction of this Museum.
Unique in the world, it is an interactive center for exploring the geological and natural heritage of the region. With a strong pedagogical aspect and visits adapted to different age groups, this is a privileged space for school visits in the context of learning about geology, natural heritage and its protection and preservation. Alongside the permanent exhibition, the Quartz Museum presents temporary exhibitions dedicated to mineralogy themes.
