25 km from the city of Viseu, and close to a small village called Côta, we find the Megalithic Necropolis of Pedralta. The megalithic nucleus of Pedralta, made up of 5 monuments, is included in a vast necropolis with about 20 dolmens that extends around the village of Sanguinhedo and Nogueira de Côta.
The largest and best known of these monuments is the Anta Maior da Pedralta, whose huge pillars boasted some of the most fantastic motifs painted in red. Discovered and excavated in 1912 by the archaeologist from Vise, José Coelho, it was one of the most important finds of the early 20th century, as it made known the art painted on megalithic monuments. The remains resulting from the archaeological excavations can be seen at Casa do Miradouro, in Viseu.
