The Núcleo Museológico do Baixo Tâmega – Sacred Art, located in the former sacristy of the Monastery of São Miguel de Refojos, was inaugurated in December 2008.
The architecture of this space is of extraordinary quality, beauty and balance.
It features a sacristy and ante-sacristy and a twisted arch, unique in the country’s architecture.
Contains pieces of sculpture and liturgical/religious furniture in jacaranda, a rare wood from Brazil.
Its collection contains Mannerist paintings from the 17th century, which are particularly valuable because they are based on themes similar to those in the Louvre Museum, in France.
This Nucleus of Sacred Art is born from a project of knowledge of the existing Heritage in the spaces, already disaffected from the cult, of the former Monastery of S. Miguel de Refojos, sacristy, ante sacristy, corridors, it is dated from the 17th century. XVII.
The architecture of the entire museum space is of extraordinary quality, beauty and balance.
The integrated reading of the oils on the canvas allowed the identification of the author – Francisco Correia, author of c.1600/Mannerism – scientific discovery that places Cabeceiras de Basto in the obligatory Cultural Route to apprehend Mannerism and the strong influences of Giorgio Vasari, precursor of Mannerism and its best followers in Lisbon with Francisco Venegas and Diogo Teixeira.
The appreciation of sculptural language is an irrefutable challenge, due to its quality and particularity. The Nucleus has three areas to visit: Painting, Sculpture – in wood and granite – and Architecture.
Free ticket.
