Pillory of Tarouca
By D. Manuel I

Tarouca is a territory of very remote Christian settlement, developing between the end of the 9th century and the 10th century, heir to a primitive village that became extinct around the same time. The “Foro de Tarouca” was donated by the Leonese king D. Fernando I to Count D. Sisnando, who boosted the population of the region. In 1514, Tarouca had a new charter given by D. Manuel, following which the pillory, this monarch even created the title of Count of Tarouca, in the person of D. João de Meneses, in 1520.

The pillory was demolished in the second half of the last century and its stones lie for many years next to the house of Senhor Duarte Lobo who, being abandoned and without function, used them already at the beginning of this century to shore up a beam in his cellar, where is found until today.

Additional notes

Soon the pillory will be replaced in the Historic Center of the City of Tarouca.
