Until the beginning of the 19th century, Punhete (currently Constância) had an old pillory, placed in another place not far from this one, closer to the Tagus.
Nothing was left of that primitive pillory, nor is it known what it would have been like, unless it was completely ruined by the French invasions.
The current pillory was manufactured again, in 1821, thanks to a subsidy of 200 thousand réis from King D. João VI. The fact that it was placed before the demolition of the ruins of the mother church explains its eccentric position in relation to the square of our time.
It consists of a column with a simple stem, surmounted by an Ionic capital crowned by a wrought iron armillary sphere and its base rests on a pedestal currently with two steps, surrounded by eight friars who were placed there at the beginning of the 20th century.
Symbol of municipal autonomy and justice, the pillory of Constância is a piece of great symbolic meaning and special artistic interest.
