Formerly Punhete, name derived from the Roman pugna tagi (fight of the Tagus) due to the rebellion of the waters at the confluence of the rivers, D. Maria II changed its name to Constância in 1836, due to the constancy that its inhabitants demonstrated in supporting the liberal cause. A land closely linked to the rivers that embrace it, today it lives essentially from the tourist use of its beautiful landscapes, from the enjoyment of the entire POMTEZE (Organisation Plan for the Banks of the Tagus and Zêzere) and from the tranquility of the waters that pass at its feet.
