Inaugurated on June 30, 1878, in the midst of iron architecture, under the risk and calculations of the prestigious Casa Eiffel, the metal bridge over the River Lima not only allowed for rail traffic, but also replaced the old wooden bridge. which connected the yard of São Bento in Viana to the left bank of the river Lima (Darque). At five hundred and sixty-three meters long and six meters wide, more than 2,000,000 kilos of iron were needed to build the decks that rest on nine pillars in granite stonework, whose foundations reach 22 meters.
Those who enter the city crossing the centenary Eiffel Bridge, observe a magnificent view over the Lima estuary, the entire city of Viana do Castelo and the hill of Santa Luzia.
