Castelo Branco has a Historic Area full of beautiful 16th century Portals and an urban fabric that has barely changed.
A study of the houses that display these 16th century portals reveals that it is an architecture with limited resources that, in many cases, makes use of a decoration that can informally be called “poor Manueline” or “popular Manueline”.
Its repetitive character allows the current house to contribute to the definition of the city’s image, occupying almost all of the urban space built in the Historic Zone. Furthermore, the current medieval house is an excellent testimony of the social and professional needs and activities of man at the time.
It is on the lintels of the doors and windows that there are decorative details with motifs in high and low relief, records from the time and indicators of the trade or economic ease and social status of the inhabitant.
