The temple of the Sacred Heart of Jesus built on the western spur of the Santa Luzia mountain, from where it dominates and “blesses” the city of Viana do Castelo, is undoubtedly one of the best known and most emblematic monuments in the country. It is an excellent example of revivalist architecture, bringing together, in a monumental way, neo-Romanesque, neo-Byzantine and neo-Gothic elements, designed by one of the architects with the greatest national and international projection at the time, the Alto Minho architect Miguel Ventura Terra (1866 – 1919). , author, for example, of the remodeling of the Palace of S. Bento, current Assembly of the Republic. Although the project dates from 1898, the work was only started in the early years of the 20th century, with the temple being opened for worship on August 22, 1926, after the author’s death, and only being completed in 1943, almost half a decade after.
The Sanctuary of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, is located at the top of the hill of Santa Luzia, in the municipality of Viana do Castelo.
Assuming itself as the “ex libris”” and visiting card of the city of Viana do Castelo, its site offers a unique view of the region, which reconciles the sea, the river Lima with its valley, and all the surrounding mountain complex, a panorama considered one of the best in the world, according to National Geographic (1927).
Its architectural project (1899) is due to the architect Miguel Ventura Terra.
Next to the Sanctuary, just a few meters away, are the ruins of the old town of Santa Luzia or Santa Luzia citadel, as well as the Pousada de Viana do Castelo.
