Very old, this Marian Sanctuary, of great devotion, was founded in 1204 by D. Sancho I. Natural and pleasant, inviting to prayer and peace of mind, the Sanctuary of Santa Maria de Vagos is a place full of stories, legends and traditions . Donated on August 18, 1200 by King D. Sancho I, to the monastery of S. Salvador de Grijó, the location of the original hermitage is unknown, but the current church was built in the 16th century. XVI. The Sanctuary is located in one of the most peaceful and pleasant areas of Vagos, inviting recollection and contemplation. Several legends and miracles have been associated with this image, since 1190, and it is these legends that created the cult rooted in the local inhabitants and in particular, in the inhabitants of Cantanhede, who moved here over the centuries. The image, they say, was the only cargo recovered from a shore wreck; and healed several people who visited her, according to legends.
The Sanctuary that you can see and discover today dates back to the 17th century, but was completely renovated in the 19th century. Even today, the distribution of bodo is associated with pilgrimages to the sanctuary.
