King’s Tomb
An individual tomb defined by a cist

It is a tomb with unique characteristics that clearly differentiates it from most monuments under a mound in the municipality of Sever do Vouga. In this particular case, everything changes. The death ritual is now another. We no longer have the large collective tombs of the Neolithic implanted in wide esplanades, to have this individual tomb on a small platform leaning against the base of a relief.

The very popular toponym “Sepultura do Rei” goes against this meaning. Basically, it explains what the grave should have been: the grave of someone important, certainly belonging to a social elite of a Copper Age or Bronze Age community.

Thus, the Sepultura do Rei is an individual tomb defined by a cist (box) with a rectangular plan with 4 stones placed at the top, 1.14 m high and 0.66 m wide. At the time of the archaeological works, its interior was very disturbed, and no pieces associated with the burial were found, thus making a more correct chronological attribution difficult. The tomb was covered by a lid and covered by a mound with a circular plan made up of earth and stones 12 m in diameter, contained by an external lithic ring. Archaeological excavations also made it possible to uncover evidence of complex rituals that took place outside the monument. It is an example of a paving of small white quartz stones located in the area bordering the monument, to the east, where some funeral ceremonies would certainly take place. Also outside, but to the north of the monument, another structure was identified that is difficult to interpret. The set of pieces collected was small, as expected, summing up to the finding of a flint chip and some elements from manual mills reused in the structure of the tumulus.

Additional notes

It is a tomb of megalithic tradition in cist probably dating from the Neo-Chalcolithic, chronological period little or nothing known in this region.
