In contrast to the typical vegetation of the region where Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus) and Pine (Pinus sp.) predominate, together with the oldest dunes, formed by the restlessness of the winds of yesteryear, Lagoa do Moitão and Lagoa da Jincosa appear. Small “oases” where the vegetation is more exuberant and where a great diversity of animals settles, creating spaces of unique beauty!
Lagos do Moitão, too, owes its size to the action of Man, as inert materials were removed from this place for later manufacture of adobes, used in the construction of the traditional Gandares houses.
From these ponds, the bush was also harvested for later manufacture of mats on rudimentary looms, but which fulfilled the function of allowing a little more comfort to exist during rest.
In these lagoons you will find a great biodiversity and you will be able to observe birds/birdwatching, such as specimens of various birds such as tits and blackbirds, as well as daytime birds of prey such as the common buzzard (Buteo búteo) and the black kite (Milvus migrans). In the more shady wetlands, the beautiful King Fern (Osmunda regalis), the fragrant Water Mint (Mentha aquatica) and the Yellow Marsh Lily (Iris pseudacorus) appear.
We also find the Caniço (Phragmites australis), native to mainland Portugal and the Madeira Archipelago, flowering between July and September, being important as a shelter and nesting place for many species of birds. From Fonte dos Amores to the picnic park, following the stream and passing by the dam, you can appreciate the riparian vegetation and enjoy the sounds of nature next to a beautiful water mirror.
These small “oases” break the monotony of urbanized environments! Perfect places to have fun outdoors taking advantage of its unique value to relax and enjoy.
